A lot of people put off joining a gym because they feel like they need to get in shape first. It sounds a little backwards when you say it out loud, but it is one of the most common things we hear. And it makes sense, because there are real reasons that belief exists.
Where the ‘get fit first’ idea actually comes from
Some of it comes from old school gym culture, the kind that made the weight room feel like it belonged to a specific type of person. Some of it comes from the images you see on social media, where everyone looks like they have been training for years. And a lot of it comes from the stories we tell ourselves before we ever walk through the door.
CrossFit gets a particular version of this. People assume it is hardcore, that only already-fit athletes can handle it, and that showing up as a beginner would be embarrassing or even dangerous. That assumption keeps a lot of people on the sideline longer than they need to be.
Who is really walking through the gym door
The typical member at CrossFit MKT is somewhere between their late twenties and late forties. Some of them played sports at some point in their life and some not at all, but life got in the way. Work, kids, long hours, and everything else that piles up meant that taking care of themselves kept getting pushed back.
When they start, most of them have poor mobility, struggle to move well under any load, and get out of breath faster than they expected. That is completely normal, and it is exactly where most people begin.
One member who stands out is a mom who had never played sports, described herself as uncoordinated, and had never been consistent with working out. She showed up anyway. She has thrived here. Her story is not unusual. It is actually pretty representative of what we see.
Why the gym works better at the start, not after
Waiting until you feel ready before joining a gym is a bit like waiting until you know how to swim before taking a lesson. The gym, when it is run well, is where you learn.
From day one, you have a coach who can see things you cannot see yourself. They can catch a movement pattern that is going to cause a problem before it becomes an injury. They can give you the cues that make a lift click. They provide the warm-up, the workout, and the cool-down, so you are not guessing at any of it.
The other thing worth saying plainly: the sooner you start, the easier it is. Waiting does not make the first day easier. It just delays the progress you could already be making.
What your first few weeks at the gym actually look like
One of the first things new members tell us they are relieved to find out is that the coach runs every class as if someone in the room is brand new. The progressions get covered every single class, not just during an intro week.
They are also surprised to see how many members scale the workout. Scaling means adjusting the weight, the movement, or the volume to match where you are right now. It is not a workaround or a lesser version of the workout. It is how the workout is supposed to be done for your current ability level. Nobody looks down on it here.
For the first two to three weeks, we encourage new members to come three to four times a week and scale appropriately. You tailor the workout to where you are physically, and you make it as hard for yourself as you want it to be.
The part no one talks about: everyone in the room was a beginner once
We address this directly, because it matters. Every single person in that room was at some point the new person who did not know what they were doing. People start at different levels of ability and at different phases of life, so what things look like for one person will not look the same as it does for another.
Our members and coaches are genuinely supportive of new people. In a regular class, members will introduce themselves, help you understand the workout of the day, show you where equipment is, and encourage you when things get hard. If you are nervous walking in for the first time, you will be welcomed. That is not a marketing line. It is just what we see happen every week.
It can feel intimidating to walk into a gym you have never been to before. We get that. But you will not be left to figure it out on your own.
How CrossFit MKT in Columbia is built around people starting from scratch
Part of what makes CrossFit MKT less intimidating is the room itself. Members are different ages, different backgrounds, different fitness levels, and come from all walks of life. There is no single mold.
When you join, you get a new member welcome box with a few gifts, our mission statement, and our core values. Before you ever step into a group class, you go through three one-on-one onboarding sessions with a coach. Those sessions cover the movements you will see in class, explain how class is structured, and gradually build up the intensity so you are ready for the pace of a regular workout. It is not thrown at you all at once.
After your first week in class, a coach will check in with you to see how things are going. The goal is to take out all the guesswork and keep you safe. All you have to do is show up. We handle the rest.
One small step that makes showing up feel less overwhelming
The smallest action you can take right now is to ask for more information. That is it. You do not have to commit to anything, sign anything, or show up to anything yet.
The reason that first action matters is simple: if you never take it, nothing changes. You stay in the same place. Reaching out breaks that pattern.
